Local News in Brief : L.A. County Sued on Malibu Sewer Plans

Share

The California Coastal Commission sued the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Friday, asking the court to invalidate a tax district created for construction of a sewer system in Malibu as a violation of the state Coastal Act.

The commission alleged that the county should have submitted the sewer system plans to the Coastal Commission for review and should have assured there would be no “new development inconsistent with the Coastal Act,” the lawsuit said.

Residents opposed to the county sewer district have said they fear the sewer would be an invitation to developers to come and spoil the character of the seaside colony of upscale homes.

Gerald Crump, chief assistant county counsel, said Friday that county officials were not surprised by the lawsuit but hoped that the differences could still be resolved without a legal fight. “We’re certainly open to discussions with the Coastal Commission,” he said.
