Proposition 99: ‘The Big Raid’

Share

With the passage of Proposition 99, the voters of California have spoken. The cigarette tax increase was approved for new programs to mitigate the devastating effects of tobacco and to teach children about the dangers of smoking.

The American Cancer Society echoes the concerns expressed in your editorial. We are dismayed at any attempt to divert funds from the intended purpose of the initiative and we vigorously oppose those who will try to thwart the will of the people of California.

The American Cancer Society, as a member of the Coalition for a Healthy California, urged friends and supporters to vote yes on 99. The California voters trusted the Coalition, American Cancer Society, American Heart Assn., American Lung Assn. and others--not the tobacco industry.

We now pledge to be vigilant in monitoring the implementation process and to work with the Legislature and the governor to carry out the voters’ mandate.
