A concoction invented at the University of Wisconsin appears to be much better for preserving livers awaiting transplantation into human recipients, and doctors hope the solution will someday give them more time for heart transplants.

In an article last week in the Journal of the American Medical Assn., six researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Surgery said the Wisconsin mixture preserved 185 human livers for periods averaging twice as long as 180 organs stored in a standard solution.
