From Times wire services

Policeman William Lozano pleaded innocent today to two counts of manslaughter in the shooting of a black motorcyclist that prompted a three-day race riot in January.

Trial was set for June 19. Lozano’s lawyer, Roy Black, asked Dade County Circuit Court Judge Phillip Davis to delay the trial until fall. He said it would be nearly impossible to question all the witnesses by June, and complained that prosecutors had yet to submit all the information he is entitled to see in order to prepare Lozano’s defense.

Black also said hostility over the shooting remains high, making it difficult to question potential witnesses in the city’s Overtown section. Davis refused to postpone the trial.
