A Palestinian youth, 16, was killed in the occupied West Bank on Monday when an object he was handling exploded in his face, wounding two others, an army spokesman said.

“It seems that three people found a suspicious object, played with it, and it exploded,” said spokesman Moshe Fogel.

“As far as we know, the army did not shoot or drop anything in the area that would have caused something like this.”

The incident, between the villages of Qabatiya and Zababida, was the latest in a series in which Palestinians have been injured by unexplained explosions in the territories.

Fogel said the youths may have been preparing a homemade bomb or may have been handling an unexploded flare that may have fallen from air force planes on training runs over the West Bank.

The army clamped a curfew on Qabatiya to prevent unrest after the death of 16-year-old Amin Mohammed abu Roub.
