From Times staff and wire service reports

About 50 of the world’s top athletes, including five-time Olympic gold medal winner Matt Biondi, will gather in Portland next weekend for the U.S. Olympic Committee’s annual athletes’ award banquet. Biondi, who also won one silver and one bronze in swimming at the Seoul Olympics, will be joined by Florence Griffith Joyner, who won three gold medals and one silver in track and field.

The two stars were among 97 male and female athletes from the Olympic and Pan American Games invited to attend the four-day USOC meeting in Portland. Schedule conflicts would not allow all the athletes to attend.

The USOC, during the Saturday night banquet, will announce its selections for 1988 sportsman and sportswoman of the year.
