The Lesson on Skid Row
More than two dozen Crenshaw High School students traveled Tuesday to Skid Row, where four formerly homeless men of the Los Angeles Mission’s rehabilitation program told them how drugs, alcohol and lack of education had shattered their lives.
After being urged by the men to remain in school, stay in touch with their families and avoid drugs and alcohol, the 25 members of a health class were taken on a tour of the mission by director Mark Holsinger.
Then the students served lunch to about 500 homeless men and women.
A spokesman for the mission at 443 S. Los Angeles St. said it was the first time a group of high school students had been brought in for a close-up look at the consequences of dropping out, drugs and drinking.
