Nicaragua would use a proposed canal linking the Pacific and Atlantic oceans only for commercial navigation and hopes it would serve as “a political instrument” for the restoration of relations with the United States, Managua’s ambassador to Japan, Jorge Huezo Castrillo, said in Tokyo. The Sandinista regime has announced plans for construction of a 180-mile-long canal by the end of the century and has appealed to other countries, including the United States and Japan, for cooperation on feasibility studies. The projected canal would cost $10 billion to $15 billion and would be wider than the Panama Canal, which is too narrow for many modern ships.
