At least 24 people were killed on the eve of Sri Lanka’s first general election in 12 years, and political leaders appealed jointly for peaceful voting. Police said 19 supporters of various political parties were gunned down in the south in attacks they blamed on the left-wing People’s Liberation Front. In addition, 25 buses were set on fire to protest the election. In the northern district of Jaffna, five Tamil separatist guerrillas opposed to the voting were killed in clashes with Indian troops, Indian sources said.
