Martin Marietta Corp. plans to form an “advanced development and technology” group in San Diego, the Bethesda, Md.-based company said Wednesday. However, Martin Marietta has not yet leased any space or determined how many employees will be hired, according to a spokesman in Bethesda.

The Martin Marietta Advanced Development & Technology Operations will “pursue advanced technology developments across (a) broad spectrum,” according to the spokesman. The operation will “focus primarily on new developments in defense electronics, missiles, astronautics and information systems,” the spokesman said.

Subsequent engineering and production will be handled by Martin Marietta’s existing divisions elsewhere in the United States, the spokesman said.

The new division will be directed by Robert J. Whalen, 57, a former vice president of Martin Marietta, who most recently was general manager of Alcoa Defense Systems.

Whalen is a San Diego resident, the spokesman said.
