Top Chinese government and party officials paid tribute to the late Panchen Lama as a Chinese patriot for opposing Tibetan independence. The Panchen Lama, second in religious rank to the exiled Dalai Lama, died of a heart attack Jan. 28 at the age of 50. At a memorial service at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, more than 1,000 officials stood with bowed heads in front of his portrait while the former Tibetan Buddhist leader was eulogized as “a great patriot and statesman.”
