Santa Monica : Women’s Shelter Opens

Share

A 15-bed shelter for mentally-ill homeless women--one of the first facilities of its kind--will open this week.

The shelter, called Daybreak, is located in a converted factory on 7th Street.

It is one of only two shelters in the state to receive special federal grant money that is awarded to projects that break ground in treating difficult-to-reach homeless, said Vivian Rothstein, head of the Ocean Park Community Center, which is staffing Daybreak.

The city of Santa Monica is donating the shelter space free for four years.

An additional $125,000 came from a developer’s contribution to a city fund for the homeless. The developer, Jerry Snyder, who is building the massive Water Garden office complex, was required by the city to donate the money, and city officials decided it should go to Daybreak, Rothstein said.

Women who are brought to the shelter will be able to stay up to six months, she said.
