Local News in Brief : New Grants From ’84 Olympics Awarded

The Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, the group that distributes to Southern California youth programs a 40% share of the 1984 Olympic surplus, has announced $1,134,443 in new grants. The largest sum, $500,000, went to complete the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena.

Another $155,800 was given to California Special Olympics Inc. for 10 sports camps in six communities throughout Southern California, and a $110,000 grant went to the Southern California Tennis Assn. to introduce 4,000 youngsters to tennis fundamentals.

Other grants included $80,136 to Phoenix House for a 15-month sports program at three sites; $76,356 to the Verdugo Hills Family YMCA for a pool enclosure so the facility can be used year-around; $47,063 to Boys’ Clubs of Long Beach Foundation; $44,606 to the Santa Monica Gymnastic Center; $41,800 to the West Los Angeles College Foundation and $40,000 to the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics.

Grants of $5,000 were given to six programs: the Canoga Park Little League; Cerritos-Artesia Little League; Coast Aquatics in Covina; Los Angeles Racing Team; Mid-Valley Baseball Assn. in the San Fernando Valley and the North Long Beach Baseball Assn. A $4,082 grant went to California Youth Soccer, while the Pasadena Babe Ruth League received $3,000 and the Trinity Neighborhood Youth Program got $1,600.
