Local News in Brief : Hearing Called in Long Beach Arrest

Share

Alarmed by a controversial videotaped arrest, the chairman of a state Senate committee has called a one-day hearing next month in Long Beach to review allegations of police misconduct there.

The Senate Select Committee on State Procurement and Expenditure Practices will question witnesses regarding the arrest of Don Jackson, according to state Sen. Daniel Boatwright (D-Concord).

Jackson, who is a Hawthorne police sergeant on leave and a self-styled crusader against officer misconduct, drove through Long Beach with another black man Jan. 14 in a “sting” operation. Using a hidden camera, a crew from NBC’s “Today” show recorded Jackson’s arrest, in which an officer appeared to push his head into a window.
