The California Highway Patrol and the Tustin Police Department will conduct a joint sobriety checkpoint Friday night through early Saturday morning at an unincorporated county road in Tustin, a CHP spokesman said Tuesday.

The checkpoint at the undisclosed location will be conducted from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., CHP spokesman Mike Lundquist said, adding that an effort will be made to check all cars. “If there’s too many cars, we will check every 5th or 10th car,” he said.

Lundquist recommended that people too inebriated to drive should call a taxi, stay overnight at a friend’s home or have a designated driver. A driver convicted of driving under the influence may receive 2 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for a first offense, he said. Multiple offenders may also have their driving privileges restricted or revoked.

“We want people to understand that if they are going to drink and drive, there will be a high probability that they will be caught,” Lundquist said.
