Union Carbide Corp.: The Danbury, Conn., chemicals firm said 1988 net income soared 185% to $662 million. Sales increased 20% to $8.32 billion. The results reflect an after-tax charge in the fourth quarter of $58 million for settlement of the litigation concerning the accident at its plant in Bhopal, India, which killed 3,300 people. Operating profit increased 79% to $1.6 billion, led by a 123% boost in operating profit for the chemicals and plastics segment.
