Politics Turns Official Pair Into True Bedfellows

LEWISTON, Me. —
A 10-year political romance led to the altar Friday for Gov. John McKernan and Rep. Olympia Snowe, Republicans whose courtship began in the state Legislature.
Radio stations and newspapers throughout the state carried congratulatory messages for the couple, who had dated for a decade.
“It just seemed like the right time to do it,” said McKernan, 40.
“It’s one of those types of situations where you either fish or cut bait,” said Snowe, who turned 42 last week.
