College Roundup : Pepperdine Sweeps Irvine in Baseball Doubleheader

Pepperdine University swept UC Irvine, 9-4 and 8-3, in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Irvine.

In the first game, Stacy Parker went four for four and Freddie Combs went two for four with three runs batted in for Irvine. John Kuzmic (3-0) allowed seven hits and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Chris Huber (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The first game was marred by a bench-clearing brawl in the fourth inning, leading to the ejection of three players--Pepperdine catcher Mike Truchske and Irvine’s Jim Koehler and Shane Rhodes.

In the second game, Pepperdine, led by Jim Doyle (four for four with a double, an RBI and a run scored) had 18 hits, and winning pitcher Britt Craven allowed eight hits and struck out seven for a complete game.

Jon Skaggs and Ed Luna each went two for three for Irvine (5-9-1).

Cal State Fullerton 17, The Master’s 5--Dave Staton had two hits, including his first home run, for host Fullerton, which had 16 hits. Staton had two-run home run and a three-run double.

Rex Peters hit a double in the first inning to extend hitting streak to 11 games for Fullerton (7-4). Rich Faulks (1-0) worked three innings in relief.

Bobby Kopenhaver had two hits and an RBI and and Randy Graves had a two-run triple for Fullerton.

UC Santa Barbara 14, Southern California College 9--Mike Slagle had three RBIs, including a two-run homer, for SCC (6-5). UCSB is 9-7.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal Poly Pomona 7, Chapman 4--Jeff Kidwiler went two for four with a double and Jason Rolish went two for four with two RBIs and a double for Chapman (7-8, 1-1) at home.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 5-2, Loyola Marymount 1-1--In the first game, Sandra Olivas went two for three with a triple and two RBIs and Shelly Mahon (2-0) gave up three hits for the victory at Chapman. In the second game, Cheri Schreck (4-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 for Chapman (8-2).

Occidental 2, Southern California College 1--Donna Trimble singled in Connie Brazell to give SCC a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning, but Occidental scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory at Occidental.

In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian College 87, San Jose Bible 75--Garrett Crayton had 20 points, Steve Welch had 16, Mike Vincent 13 and Mike DeVries and Steve Herd 12 each to lead PCC (30-9). PCC led, 44-40, then went on an 18-0 run in the second half to seal the victory.

In Big West women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 55, San Jose State 34--Kathy Lizarraga, with 14 points, and Natasha Parks, with 13, led UC Irvine at San Jose. Irvine is 8-17, 4-12.

Lora Alexander led San Jose (4-22, 1-16) with 10 points.

In a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game:

Pt. Loma Nazarene 77, Southern California College 53--Lori Halliday scored 15 points and Gail Brown had 13 points and 14 rebounds for SCC at home. SCC finishes its season 5-25 overall, 1-11 in conference play.

At the Big West Conference swimming and diving championships:

Matt Curry won the 100-yard freestyle (45.21 seconds), Brian Pajer won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:01.33) and Chris Duplanty took second in the 200 breastroke (2:03.20) to lead the UC Irvine’s men’s team.
