Bonnie Blair won the women’s competition at the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships at Heerenveen, Netherlands, scoring a record 159.435 points. The old mark was 160.060, set by East Germany’s Karin Kania three years ago.

Blair, who won the 500 meters on Saturday and Sunday, edged defending champion Christa Luding of East Germany, who also bettered the old record with 159.600 points.

Igor Zhelezovsky of the Soviet Union won three of four events and equaled fellow Soviet Pavel Pegov’s world record of 1 minute 12.58 seconds in the 1,000 to set a record of 145.945 points in the men’s competition.
