Former Assemblyman Paul E. Zeltner (R-Lakewood), who was defeated last November by Democrat Willard H. Murray of Paramount, has called on Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp to investigate what he labeled fraudulent endorsement letters mailed by Murray’s campaign.
Zeltner Monday cited a dozen different letters and mailers sent to voters using endorsements from a variety of Democrats, including Van de Kamp and Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), and such groups as the National Rifle Assn.
The NRA recently acknowledged supporting Murray but disavowed the mailer, saying it was altered and distributed without the NRA’s permission. The group also has asked Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner to investigate the letter.
Zeltner complained that politicians or groups “may have endorsed Murray, but the letters that went out were forgeries, particularly the letter from the NRA.”
Murray scoffed at Zeltner’s complaint as “sour grapes” and without any merit.
