The State : Parnell Picked for USDA Post
California farm chief Jack Parnell was nominated by President Bush to be deputy U.S. secretary of agriculture. Parnell, 53, director of the state Department of Food and Agriculture since 1987, is the first Californian chosen for a high-level job in the Bush Administration. If confirmed by the Senate, he will be chief deputy to Agriculture Secretary Clayton K. Yeutter. Republican Parnell, who has a 4,000-acre ranch near Auburn, is a former auctioneer of pedigree livestock and agricultural magazine editor.
