The Nation : Pact Calls for Closure of Shoreham Plant

New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo and the Long Island Lighting Co. signed a tentative agreement to close the $5.4-billion Shoreham nuclear power plant, making it the first completed U.S. nuclear plant shut down before generating electricity for its customers. The deal, which sells the Long Island plant to the state for $1 and provides for its dismantlement, still must be approved by the state Public Service Commission, the New York Power Authority, the Long Island Power Authority and LILCO’s stockholders. Reactor opponents contended that it would be impossible to safely evacuate the 1.3 million Long Island residents who could be endangered by a nuclear accident.
