Bell : Operation Off the Wall to Start Cleanup Drive

Share

Bell city officials are enlisting the help of residents and schoolchildren as they launch a citywide graffiti removal effort on Saturday.

The all-day paint-a-thon will begin early in the morning and conclude with an afternoon barbecue at City Hall. City officials said their goal is to remove all the graffiti in the two-square-mile city. Merchants have donated paint and other materials.

The paint-a-thon is part of a project called Operation Off the Wall, in which city officials say they are taking a tougher stance against graffiti through education, enforcement and removal.

“It is our hope that Operation Off the Wall will create an awareness in Bell that graffiti will not be tolerated,” Mayor George G. Mirabal said.

Officials of the city’s DARE program will work with elementary schoolchildren to teach them that graffiti is vandalism. Police officials also will monitor areas where graffiti is dominant, and prosecute offenders, officials said.
