Ruby Mae Brown won a lengthy delay in her animal-abuse trial after she hired an attorney Wednesday who requested more time to review the case.

A new trial date of July 17 was set by San Diego Municipal Judge Robert Coates at the request of attorney Hodge Crabtree.

Brown, 61, had been representing herself on 110 misdemeanor counts of neglecting and abusing animals at her Kelly’s Pet Hotel on Morena Boulevard.

The case has had several delays because of Brown’s unfamiliarity with legal procedures and a mental competency test ordered last month. Two psychiatrists found her competent to stand trial.

In January, Brown allegedly threatened to kill animal-control officials who were trying to have her kennel license revoked, and she was jailed several times.
