Local News in Brief : Big Youth Hostel Under Construction
Work has begun on a new hostel that its owners say will be the largest in California.
The $4.7-million, 200-bed inn is being constructed on 2nd Street in downtown Santa Monica.
Owned by American Youth Hostels Inc., and the Los Angeles Council, the 30,000-square-foot project will also incorporate the historic Rapp Saloon, the oldest building in Santa Monica. The saloon was saved from demolition in 1986.
It will cost travelers just $12 a night to stay at the hostel, the owners say.
