Khomeini Threat Imperils Liberties
The Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union wants to call public attention to the fundamental principles involved in the threat by the Ayatollah Khomeini on the life of Salman Rushdie, author of the book “The Satanic Verses.”
Both the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantee the right of free speech and expression. The First Amendment also, of course, guarantees the right to the free expression of religion.
Clearly implied in the right of free speech and expression is the freedom of publication and free access to the market place where books are bought and sold. If these rights are denied under threat of terrorism, American freedom is threatened and human rights are denied.
European governments have taken a strong stand against the ayatollah’s action and our secretary of state has spoken out. As Jefferson stated, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” In the present situation we would add that courage against an oppressive terrorist is added to this “price of liberty.”
