Eight South American foreign ministers from the countries spanned by the Amazon are to meet here today to discuss protection of the world’s largest jungle, which is slowly being destroyed by mankind.

Foreign ministers of Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname are to spend three days discussing cooperative measures to stop the destruction of the jungle, which is threatening Earth’s ecosystem.

The Amazon basin--the world’s largest jungle--is a vital source of oxygen for the planet.

But loggers, miners and farmers have burned large chunks of the Amazon forests, slashing the defense of the ecosystem and threatening livelihoods of Indians who reside there.
