WORLD : India’s Bootleg Liquor Toll Hits 125

BARODA, India — Lethal bootleg liquor has killed at least 125 people in western India and scores more are battling for life, hospital officials said today.
More than 150 people were undergoing emergency treatment at Baroda City Hospital in Gujarat state after drinking illegal liquor containing methyl alcohol. Autopsies were being performed in the hospital yard for lack of space inside, and a charitable trust offered free firewood for cremations. Doctors said the death toll would likely keep rising because the methyl alcohol had extensively damaged the brain, vision and respiratory system of the surviving patients.
