The nation’s median family income in 1987 reached $30,850, rising 1% from 1986 after inflation and narrowly exceeding the previous high mark of 1973, the Census Bureau said today.

At the same time, however, the increase was concentrated among white families while median incomes for black and Latino families remained stagnant at $18,100 and $20,310, respectively, the bureau reported.

Moreover, the annual survey found median household income--that of single earners as well as unrelated persons in a household--was $25,990, essentially unchanged from 1986 after adjusting for a 3.7% inflation rate.
