Viking S&L; Gets Conservator: William J. Crawford, California savings and loan commissioner, appointed William D. Davis, his chief deputy, as conservator of Viking Savings & Loan in Santa Monica because Viking “lacked a full complement of directors and was operating in a manner that threatened to impair its financial condition.” On Jan. 31, Viking had assets of $24 million and total savings accounts of $23 million. A pending merger of Viking with Westside Savings & Loan of Los Angeles has been approved by Viking’s directors and stockholders. Crawford said Davis plans to continue negotiating the merger. The S&L; will be open for business as usual today.
