Hollywood Donnybrook
I find the donnybrook that’s going on about the ownership of the Hollywood name very amusing, considering the fact that I was born within an ass’ roar of the town of Hollywood, County Wicklow, in Ireland, established 1793 (“11 Other Hollywoods Get Together to Grouse,” Metro, March 1). My cousin runs the post office there, one of the five buildings in the town.
My paternal grandfather was born in Hollywood, County Down, in 1868, but an Irish poet mentions the town in a poem written in 1823. It is said, “For every Hollybush that grows in Ireland, a poet is born.”
I have never been to Hollywood, County Tipperary, but I once kissed a girl from there, and what’s more, she kissed me back.
So all of this I think entitles me to a percentage of any royalties forthcoming from the use of the name. Incidently, my birthplace is also within a baby’s bawl from the town of Donnybrook, established 1673.
