Iran hanged 81 drug traffickers Friday, the highest daily toll since it began cracking down on illegal drugs in January, Tehran Radio said.

The 81, including two women, were convicted of possessing and selling heroin, opium, hashish and other narcotics and were executed in Tehran and 26 other cities, the report said.

Some also were convicted of theft, illegal possession of arms, kidnaping, and “indecent acts in contravention to Islamic law,” the radio said.

The women were hanged in Tehran’s Qasr prison, while the others were executed in public.

Friday’s hangings bring to 356 the number of executions reported since Iran’s new anti-drug law went into effect Jan 21.
