A bomb and a hand grenade were discovered on San Diego streets over the weekend, according to police and fire officials.

The devices were safely removed, authorities said. It was not known who was responsible for leaving either device on the streets.

Saturday evening, a passer-by found a camera case with a bomb inside near the intersection of Florida Street and El Cajon Boulevard in Normal Heights, Police Sgt. Jim Long said.

Like a Large Firecracker

The case contained a seal bomb, with BB pellets glued to the outside, Long said. A seal bomb is a large, waterproof firecracker used by fishermen to frighten seals away from their nets.

Relatively harmless in itself, a seal bomb could be dangerous if the pellets were hurled from the bomb with explosive force, police said.

The Metro Arson Strike Team will attempt to learn the origin of the altered bomb, Long said.

Sunday morning, a bicyclist discovered a grenade lying about six feet from the curb near Harbor Drive and Nimitz Boulevard, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Scratches on the grenade, which was wrapped in plastic, indicated it might have been tossed from a car, Robinson said.

The grenade was removed from the street by the fire department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, Robinson said.

The fire department ordnance experts were to turn the grenade over to the Navy’s bomb disposal unit today.
