The state’s Aid to Families with Dependent Children program earned an A on a report card released by Congress. Officials in the House Ways and Means Committee added that, although California and Michigan scored highest in the committee’s evaluation, “most states have failed to provide adequate AFDC benefits for children in poor families.” A family of three living in California received a maximum benefit amount of $633 from the AFDC program last year, which reflected a 14% increase in purchasing power from 1984.
