Insurer Ordered to Stop: The California Department of Insurance ordered First Farwest Life Insurance Co. of Portland, Ore., to cease transacting insurance business in California. The firm, which was placed in receivership Feb. 27 by the Oregon Department of Insurance, is threatened with insolvency and operating in a hazardous manner, the California department said. The firm wrote slightly less than $100 million in life, accident and health insurance in California in the first nine months of 1988.
