Boxing promoter Bob Arum blasted the World...
Boxing promoter Bob Arum blasted the World Boxing Assn. saying: “It is extorting sanctioning fees and showing no respect for us Americans. This is a fringe organization, a foreign organization that is trying to break the IBF (International Boxing Federation), the only American boxing organization, by acting unlawfully.”
Arum was reacting to the recent decision of the WBA, based in Venezuela, to strip its middleweight champion, Sumbu Kalambay of Italy, of his title. Kalambay will fight IBF champion Michael Nunn of North Hollywood March 25 in a Las Vegas bout that was to have unified the two titles.
The WBA announced it was taking the action because Kalambay was obligated to fight Herol Graham of England, the WBA’s No. 1 middleweight contender. Kalambay has already beaten Graham.
