Mexico Bars U.S. Hogs: Mexico is turning away truckloads of live hogs at the border because the animals have not been vaccinated for hog cholera, a disease eradicated 10 years ago in the United States, Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.) said. Bentsen said the Mexican ban of U.S.-bred hogs was imposed with little or no warning, “has no basis in scientific fact” and may be based on “mistaken information.” Bentsen said he was asking U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills and Agriculture Secretary Clayton K. Yeutter to negotiate an end to the problem. Bentsen’s office said Mexico began turning away U.S. hogs late last week.
