Veteran musher Joe Runyan snapped a three-year winning streak by Susan Butcher when he finished first in the 17th annual Iditarod sled dog race. Runyan and his dogs covered the 1,168 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, in 11 days and finished five miles ahead of Butcher.

Runyan, 40, received $50,000 of the $250,000 purse but failed by three hours to break Butcher’s 1987 record.
