Eighteen students from Senegal say they will leave China during the next five days because it is racist and life for them there has become intolerable. The departures would be the first such large exodus of African students since racial incidents in four Chinese cities in December and January. The incidents began in Nanjing when Africans and Chinese fought on Christmas Eve after Africans tried to take Chinese girlfriends to a school dance. Chinese later marched through the streets shouting “Kill the black devils!” and demanding that Africans involved in the fight be punished.
