The Chinese Communist Party announced that it has expelled 23,000 members for corruption and incompetence and brought disciplinary actions against more than 60,000 others judged unfit. The actions were announced as anti-corruption laws intended to punish profiteering by officials went into effect. The party moves and the new regulations stemmed from a campaign to clean up the party amid rising public discontent over corruption and ineptitude among the 6.4 million members of China’s ruling party.
