Prince Charles withdrew today from a polo match in Dubai after fears for his safety as a result of Britain’s dispute with Iran, the Foreign Office said.

The heir to the British throne planned to lead the Windsor Park team against a Dubai Select side at the Dubai Polo Cup on the final day of his tour of Persian Gulf states with Princess Diana.

The British Broadcasting Corp. reported that Charles had been given an unprecedented order by the government not to take part. Tehran Radio on Thursday denounced the royal tour of the region as a snub to Islam. Iran broke diplomatic relations with Britain this month over the publication of novelist Salman Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses.”
