Andersen Steps Down as BYU Basketball Coach

Ladell Andersen, who coached Brigham Young University to a 114-71 record in six seasons as basketball coach, resigned Friday.

BYU was 14-15 in 1988-89, Andersen’s first losing season.

“I felt this was the best thing I could do for myself, the university and everyone concerned,” said Andersen, 60. “There was never any pressure put on me by anyone at Brigham Young or the administration.”

Schools officials were surprised by Andersen’s move.

“There is a difference between a resignation and a retirement,” Athletic Director Glenn Tuckett said. “I feel Ladell Andersen is retiring as a basketball coach and to do other things.”

Tuckett hopes to hire a coach within 10 days. Roger Reid and Carl Ingersoll, BYU assistants, are expected to be interviewed for the job.
