From Times wire services

The White House today announced appointment of a task force to review environmental considerations in two areas off California and one off Florida where President Bush has postponed offshore oil leasing.

The task force will look into potential environmental damage from drilling in federal waters off Northern California, Southern California and the southern Gulf Coast of Florida, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said.

Establishment of the task force keeps a promise Bush made when he made his budget proposal to Congress last month. He said he would postpone leasing in the three areas pending the report of a committee of representatives of the Interior and Energy departments and the National Academy of Sciences. The task force report is due on the President’s desk by Jan. 1, 1990.
