This Catch More Than Meets His Expectation

Most fishermen at the Salton Sea are there to catch orangemouth corvina, which have become active in recent weeks, and Lee Dexter of Los Angeles was no different.

However, while fishing near the Alamo River with a live tilapia minnow--the most popular bait for corvina--Dexter hooked and landed a 61-pound flathead catfish.

WILLOW BEACH--Trout fishing good near Mile Marker 35 and Windy Canyon. Berkley Power Bait best bet. Striped bass slow, biting best between Mile Markers 43-52.

LAKE MEAD--Striped bass most active in Vegas Wash and Lake Mead Marina. Anchovies best bet. Largemouth bass picking up, biting best at drop-offs at 6-20 feet. Water dogs and plastic worms working best.

BULLHEAD CITY--Trout bite best in river, with Power Bait working. Largemouth bass picking up on lake, biting best off points. Trollers catching an occasional trout to four pounds.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth Corvina, averaging 10-13 pounds, biting best at State Park. Some catfish biting at Alamo River. Croaker bite best at north shore.

LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass moving away from shallows, biting best at drop-offs. Geoff Rizzo, Torrance, seven-pound bass. Jeannie Sedar, Santa Barbara, 7 1/2-pound bass. Trout biting off E Point. Trollers using three colors and Needlefish lure doing best in Santa Cruz Bay.

LAKE CASITAS--John Cameron, San Pedro, 14 1/4- and 11 1/4-pound largemouth bass. Carl Quinn, Simi Valley, 12-2 bass. Marilyn Graham, Corona, 10-pound bass. Bill Nelson, Reseda, eight-pound bass. Glenn Curry, Oxnard, 12-pound bass. Crappie and trout bites fair.

PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth bass biting throughout lake, best in shallow coves. Most bass baits working. Tim and Lori Flannigan, Canyon Country, nine-pound largemouth, released. Striped bass biting at several areas. Paul Selkirk, Simi Valley, 18-, 14- and 8-pound stripers, released.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass biting throughout lake. Bob Valko, Pico River, 3 1/2-pound bass. Trout biting best in Cow Cove and along north shoreline. Crappie biting mostly in shallow areas. Mini-jigs best bet.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass biting best in shallow water. C. W. Hawkins, La Puente, 7-8 bass. Bob Vatterria, San Bernardino, 3-2 bass. Rocky Brown, Corona, 5-4 bass. Trout biting best on Power Bait. Jim Zodicka, Temecula, three-pound trout. Crappie biting off launch ramps.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Largemouth bass biting along rocky areas between points. Brian Kinder, four-pound largemouth. Dave Edwards, Crestline, five-pound largemouth. Greg Combs, Lancaster, 18-pound striper and five-pound largemouth. Striped bass bite fair. Mark Guatney, Summit Valley, 25-pound striper. Lee Johnson, Crestline, 18-pound striper. Crappie bite fair. Some limits of trout, caught mostly at Miller Canyon.

LAKE HENSHAW--Crappie the main attraction, biting best under docks. Largemouth bass scattered.
