The National Organization for Women says its message favoring abortion rights was refused by more than two dozen radio stations in five northeastern cities.

“It never occurred to us that we wouldn’t be able to place paid ads on a subject that’s on everyone’s lips. It is the issue of the day in terms of women’s rights,” Molly Yard, president of NOW, said at a news conference.

NOW budgeted about $40,000 to place the 60-second spot on 35 stations in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. Eight stations agreed to carry the spot and 26 declined; one station had not decided, Yard said.

The spot was aimed at promoting an April 9 march in Washington supporting the right to abortion.
