Sao Paulo, Brazil — A steel strike which had raised fears of a violent clash between workers and police ended peacefully on friday in Brail’s industrial city of Belo Horizonte.
About 1,000 workers, some masked and armed with iron bars, had occupied the steelworks of Mannesmann for 11 days to press for an 84% pay raise.
A court ruled that the workers had top leave the plant and there were fears of a violent confrontation between strikers and police.
After mediation by the Labor Ministry, the Mannesmann workers accepted a 26% rise and introduction of a six-hour shift.
