The World

King Fahd of Saudi Arabia received a spectacular welcome in Cairo on his arrival from Iraq, where he signed a nonaggression pact with President Saddam Hussein. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, other dignitaries and thousands of schoolchildren greeted Fahd as he began a three-day visit to Egypt, his first as monarch. The visit was seen by Cairo commentators as a symbolic end to an era in which Egypt was isolated from other Arab nations because of its 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
