A tourist photographing New York City’s skyline Friday stumbled into the East River and was swept downstream, but the crew of a traffic helicopter spotted him and police officers plucked him from the water.

James Connor, 49, of South Boston, Mass., was taking pictures from a barge when he lost his footing, Sgt. Howard Smith of the Police Harbor Unit said. Connor was carried downriver and about 300 yards offshore by the current, and officers aboard a boat were unable to find him.

The helicopter crew spotted the man and notified police, who pulled him from the water. Connor was listed in stable condition.
