Path Through Course

Share

I was very distressed to read that members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors are still planning to build a hiking and biking path through Aliso Creek Golf Course. Newspapers are filled with articles claiming we need more recreation for senior citizens, as the U.S. population is becoming more aged.

As a senior citizen, I can tell you golf is “our game.” Hiking and biking are not. Kathie Matsuyama’s comment concerning the new study to be done on the plan, “We want to show Mrs. Brown and the golfers that we can make a path that goes through the course sensitively,” made me ill. There is no way to put a 16-foot path through the canyon floor without ruining this 40-year-old recreation area. Is it so important for the hikers and bikers to reach the Coast Highway, which is congested, and Aliso Beach, which is so crowded that the Laguna Beach Police have had trouble with crowd control?

I hope the supervisors have had the opportunity to observe the highway at Aliso Beach on a summmer or weekend day. Because of the perilous highway conditions at these times, it is wrong to encourage bikers to enter and travel the Coast Highway.
