Mozambique Rebels Free 4 Red Cross Workers Who Were Held for 2 Weeks
Mozambican rebels Friday freed four Red Cross workers they had held for two weeks, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.
“We are extremely happy that everything went well, and we are happy to have our people back in good health,” Red Cross spokesman Paul-Henri Morard said.
He said the workers were not kidnaped but “woke up” in guerrilla hands during a raid by the right-wing RENAMO resistance movement against government forces in northern Mozambique and the guerrillas immediately made arrangements to hand them back.
The Red Cross named the four as Claude Felix of Switzerland, Friedrun Medert-Le Borgne of West Germany, Liselotte Bosma of the Netherlands and Januario Mpatua of Mozambique.
They had been working in the virtually inaccessible coastal district of Memba in Nampula province where more than 5,000 people have starved to death this year.
